Overview
The Art of Living Foundation offers programs to uncover the strength, peace, and joy that lie at the core of every human being. By nurturing the spirit and compassion of every individual, the Foundation seeks to help build a global society that is free of stress, violence, and misery - and full of service, wisdom, and celebration.

leader and humanitarian His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar that began in
1982. Accredited as a United Nations
Non-Governmental organization in 1996, it is now one of the UN's
largest volunteer-based NGOs. It works in special consultative status
with the UN's Economic and Social Council, participating in a variety
of committees and activities relating to health, education, sustainable
development, conflict resolution, and disaster relief.

The Art of Living Foundation engages in a wide array of educational programs and humanitarian service projects that
uplift individuals, make a difference in local communities, and foster
global change. The Foundation is...

seen working in association with its sister organization, the
International Association for Human Values. Service Projects by the
volunteers have brought both physical and trauma relief to several
regions of conflict and natural disaster around the world, besides
contributing to the cessation of decades-long violence.

and government, prison inmates and staff, trauma survivors, people with
depression, and programs for people living with cancer, HIV, and other
life-threatening diseases.

The Mission:
To strengthen the individual and society by offering programs inspired
by His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar that eliminate stress, create a
sense of belonging, restore human values, develop life to its full
potential, and encourage people from all backgrounds to come together
in celebration, wisdom, and service.

The Art of Living Foundation celebrated its 25th year of service to the world in
2006 / 2007, with a program in India attended by heads of state, cultural
leaders, and more than 2.5 million others. This Silver
Jubilee, which focused on Human Values, has inspired a renewed commitment to a Stress-Free,
Violence-Free World.
Even in the worst of circumstances — New Orleans after Hurrican
Katrina, New York after 9/11, the Southeast Asia tsunami, the killing
fields of Kashmir and central Bihar, the aftermath of Kosovo, Iraq,
Afghanistan, the Pakistan/Kashmir and Guajarat Earthquakes, and other
areas of trauma — the Foundation’s programs and volunteers have
demonstrated again and again that both regional and personal
transformation can happen rapidly and be sustained. So far, the Art of
Living Foundation’s service projects, trauma relief, and
stress-reduction and self-development programs have benefited more than
25 million people on six continents, in more than 150 countries around
the world.

2007: Members of the United States
Congress and Senate, Ambassadors, Judges, Business Leaders, Scientists,
Educators, and other prominent national and international leaders
acknowledged and honored His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (and the
AOLF) for invaluable contributions to the world community. The event,
held at the prestigous Kennedy Center in Washington DC on March 28,
2007, commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Art of Living
Foundation. Among prominent world-leaders and people from all walks of
life, Sri
Sri presented the Universal Declaration for Human Values. 28th of March
2007 was announced Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Day in Washington DC.
His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar introduced the Universal Declaration of Human Values at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. during the Art of Living Foundation's 25th anniversary celebrations. The declaration provides a pragmatic vision for the world community, representing a roadmap to foster understanding and harmonious coexistence among different peoples and cultures.

2006: AOLF celebrates its 25th year of service with a Silver Jubilee
Celebration and Global Peace Conference in Bangalore, India. Over two
million people from around the world attend, including Indian President
Abdul Kallam and heads of state from Europe, Asia, and Africa. The APEX
(Achieving Personal Excellence) Program is conducted at IBM's Watson
Research center and met with resounding success. This corporate
training program has also benefitted such organizations as NASA,
Capital One, and Juniper Networks.

2005: AOLF volunteers initiate trauma relief programs for Hurricane
Katrina survivors in New Orleans. On the other side of the world, AOLF
volunteers are among the first to provide relief for survivors of the
India-Pakistan earthquake.
2004: Sri Sri is welcomed in Pakistan as he embarks on a historic
four-day peace mission. He is the first spiritual leader from India to
ever visit Pakistan on such a mission. Through AOLF and IAHV's
worldwide efforts, 400 tons of supplies are collected within days of
the tsunami in Asia. Together the organizations initiate a trauma
relief program to heal the emotional trauma of the tsunami survivors
and prepare them to rebuild their lives.
2003: Sri Sri addresses NASA in Washington D.C. Volunteers from the Art
of Living Foundation conduct trauma relief programs in Iraq.
2001: AOLF offers free programs throughout New York City to help the city heal from the trauma of the 9/11 attacks.
2000: Sri Sri gives the keynote address at the United Nations Millennium
World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders in New York City.
1999: The International Association for Human Values (IAHV), the sister
organization for the Art of Living Foundation, is created. His Holiness
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (or Sri Sri, as he is now affectionately called)
and His Holiness The Dalai Lama are two of the co-founders, among
several former heads of state. Sri Sri gives a talk on the healing
power of Sudarshan Kriya to scientists at the National Institute of
Health in Maryland. The Youth Leadership Training Program is launched,
to empower the young people of rural villages to improve the quality of
life in their communities. The first Tribal School is opened.
1997: The 5H Program, an initiative promoting sustainable rural
development in the form of Health, Hygiene, Homes, Human Values and
Harmony in Diversity, is launched in India. The first ART Excel (All
Round Training in Excellence) Course for children is held. Today, the
Art of Living youth program has touched the lives of thousands of youth
through ART Excel (ages 8-13 years), the Youth Empowerment Seminar
(ages 14-18 years) and YES+ (18+ years).
1994: The first Prison SMART program is launched in India, helping
prison inmates rehabilitate to re-enter society. Today over 120,000
prison inmates from countries across the world including the U.S.,
South Africa, India and the United Kingdom - have participated in this
program. The Art of Living Foundation is certified as an official
United Nations NGO.
1993: The first Art of Living Course designed specially for cancer patients is held in the United States.
1992: Women's empowerment programs are launched in India.
1989: The Art of Living Foundation (AOLF) is established as a non-profit organization in the United States
1986: The first Art of Living Courses in North America are taught in Apple Valley, California and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
1983: The first Art of Living Course outside of India is held in
Montreux, Switzerland. Today the course is taught in over 140 countries
and has benefited more than 20 million people worldwide.
1982: His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (or Punditji, as he was known
then) teaches a small gathering of fifteen people in Shimoga, India.
This was the first Art of Living Course.
Professional Affiliations
| The Art of Living Foundation is an
international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in special
consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of
the United Nations participating in a variety of committees and
activities relating to health, education, sustainable development and
conflict resolution. Being an NGO, Art of Living Foundation is both politically and religiously
neutral, having thousands volunteers from all backgrounds and
traditions operating in over 150 countries across the globe.
